Epson Perfection V700 Driver Review:

The Epson Perfection V700 Photo offers some one-of-a-kind attributes that set it apart from its competitors. For instance, it features a white screen that covers the transparency unit when not scanning.

It also includes a film strip holder which makes it possible to digitize 35mm negatives. Furthermore, it has a bluish lamp that optimizes negative and film scanning results in less time.

Transparency unit:

The flatbed scanner with the transparency unit does what no other comparable product can: Its scanned results come close to those of high-quality film scanners. The bundled software is impressive too: Epson Creativity Suite includes the File Manager (an explorer-type image viewer), and Silverfast SE. Which offers all kinds of adjustments for scanning (dust removal and color restoration) as well as ABBYY FineReader 6 Sprint Plus OCR software.

For film and slide scans the V700 Photo uses an advanced Dual Lens System to optimize the scanning results: Depending on the selected mode it automatically switches between the reflective lens and the one for the transparent object. This way, even complex film material can be scanned in outstanding quality. The result is a perfect digital copy of the original, even when the subject is not completely straight or in focus. This is made possible by a new, innovative bluish lamp and by a lens combination with different optical elements for each specific mode.

Film holder for 4×5″ flat films:

The V700 can digitize almost every usual film format. This is a feature that is also appreciated when scanning old downsides or slides. The holder can be opened and locked easily and is well-fixed from all sides. So inserting even slightly curved material is not a problem. However, there is no film holder for 9x12cm films, which are somewhat smaller than 4×5 inches and were formerly common in Europe.

The V700 Photo is a high-end flatbed scanner with one of the highest scan resolutions. It delivers clear-quality results comparable to those of a dedicated film scanner. Scanning times are a bit slow. However, it depends on the selected resolution. For example, if you want to scan at 2400 effective dpi it takes 17 minutes to scan four slides. This is a long time, especially if you compare it to real film scanners. Nevertheless, it is still quite reasonable in comparison to other desktop scanners. The V700 Photo can be connected to a computer either via USB 2.0 or Firewire IEE1394 cable. A CD with software and a digital manual is included in the delivery.

Medium format film holder:

The included film holder for framed 35mm slides has space for 12 slides. These can be comfortably inserted and are locked in place by closing the holder. The automatic picture arranging during the pre-scan works very well with whole film strips and one rarely has to specify scan ranges manually.

In contrast to many other flatbed scanners, the V700 is able to produce high-quality scans even from very dark pictures. It does not reach however the quality of high-end film scanners in this regard.

In particular, the medium format film holder does not stay flat when used with film strips. Which are not placed between the small tabs as they are supposed to be but rest on top of the AN insert (see photo). I wonder why Epson did not design this holder like the better Scanning ones! That way they would have avoided this problem. This is a clear reason why I prefer to use the holders of BetterScanning (which are available for this model too). They also have an adjustable height setting and therefore do not require the additional plastic feet.

Film holder for 9x12cm films:

For those who want to digitize a few old negatives or a film strip. The V700 Photo is well-suited. Unlike many other scanners. It provides a film holder for 9x12cm films (somewhat smaller than 4×5 inches). In addition, there is a separate holder for framed 35mm slides.

The V700 Photo uses a high-speed ASIC processor that acquires and processes image data much faster than scanners which rely on the PC’s internal processing system. This is especially useful when scanning negatives and slides since it reduces the time required for the scan process to complete.

The V700 Photo includes DIGITAL ICE Lite Technologies to automatically remove surface defects on scanned photos such as scratches, dust particles, and folds. It works very well and is a real relief for users who are not satisfied with the picture quality of their original prints. It can be activated individually for each picture or a selection of pictures specified by marking checkboxes.
