There’s usually precious little to say about the design elements of a laser printer, because (with a few exceptions) printer suppliers assume their buyers want them for drab corporate offices. The DocuPrint M205b at least tries to escape the beige hole.

The DocuPrint M205b printed well, with page speeds close enough to Fuji Xerox’s claimed speeds to be acceptable. It used standard or high-yield toner cartridges rated for 1000 or 2200 pages.

Printer:

Fuji Xerox’s inexpensive DocuPrint M205b is a solid LED printer with a reasonable duty cycle. It looks the part, too; unlike many lasers that skew toward drab corporate offices (with the odd exception), this one comes in a pleasing matte black with softly-rounded corners.

Print quality is pristine, even on thick paper. And while page speeds aren’t blazingly fast, they do come close to the vendor’s claimed rates; we managed to get 19 pages out of the CM205b in a minute.

On the downside, it doesn’t support Wi-Fi or Ethernet, which we would have expected given the price zone; and when we tried to connect a Dell Optiplex GX270 computer via USB 2.0, the printer kept giving us a “canceling…” error message. So we reinstalled the drivers and changed the cable, but it didn’t help. It may have been a driver bug in the Windows XP Professional SP3 operating system, we’re not sure.

Scanner:

The M205b does not support scanning to a USB drive and only has a rear USB port that supports USB 2.0. When I connect this printer to my Dell Optiplex GX270 or Optiplex 620 computers, the “Print” button will briefly light up on the printer panel but nothing prints. The computer shows a “canceling…” message and the printer drivers do not show up in the Device Manager.

The scanner on this model has a flatbed design and is capable of capturing documents in good enough detail for OCR. It can also read error codes and pull live engine data, though it’s not as robust as other Bluetooth OBD2 scanners we’ve tested.

Copier:

Fuji Xerox’s DocuPrint M205b is a solid, all-in-one mono laser printer that also copies and scans. It’s designed for small businesses that do a lot of high-volume printing. Its 20,000 pages per month duty cycle should be more than enough for most businesses.

The inbuilt flatbed scanner is 1200×1200 dpi and works well for scanning photos and documents at a decent quality. However, it’s not the best for extracting fine image detail from photographs and it isn’t suitable for OCR.

One thing that we found disappointing is the lack of connection options. While we’ve become accustomed to seeing Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections in LED printers, the DocuPrint M205b is strictly a USB 2.0 zone. It’s also not a duplexer, which is something that seems to be creeping into most printers in this price range. We printed several documents, and their print quality was good. Their page speed was close enough to Fuji Xerox’s claimed speeds to be acceptable.

DocuPrint M205b Driver is a program developed by Fuji Xerox. The program is designed to work with a variety of Windows OS. The most recent version of this program was released on 2013-09-25. The program can be downloaded from the company’s website. A free trial version is available. This program is a good choice for those who need a simple, easy-to-use faxing application.

The printer’s rated print speed is quite acceptable and matches Fuji Xerox’s claims. The first page prints in 9.6 seconds, which is very reasonable for a laser printer. It is also relatively quiet when printing.

The scanner supports scanning to a USB drive attached or an app on a host computer. It has a 1200×1200 dpi resolution and a very small footprint, making it a perfect office-friendly device.
